A calendar was produced by Global Unity Education Resources, to: - Support students in Colombia to express their visions of a better world - Raise funds to assist public schools with learning resources for students and professional development for teachers in Colombia - Foster amity between people in different countries Teachers in Colombia had been invited to send their students' drawings of "A Better World," "A Good Life," or "A World I'd like to live in," to Global Unity Education Resources, #608 - 1500 Howe Street, Vancouver, BC V6Z 2N1, Canada (Email: vchu2007@hotmail.com).
Fifteen drawings were chosen and used to make the 2005 "Visions of Our World" calendars. The calendars were distributed and sold in Vancouver, Canada to raise funds for supporting the "ELT and Citizenship in Colombia Trust Fund." To see photos of the calendar, click on
http://www.globalunityed.com/calendar.htm The "ELT and Citizenship in Colombia Trust Fund" will be used to: ~ Support citizenship, human rights, and peace education within English language teaching. ~ Subsidize professional development workshops, projects, and courses for Colombian teachers working in public schools. ~ Provide books and learning resources to under-resourced schools in Colombia. ~ Equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values that can help them confront both local and global problems. ~ Promote an international view of understanding and cooperation within English Language Teaching in Colombia. 2004 FUNDRAISING RESULTS FOR COLOMBIA: C$2,000 Despite disappointing incidences of missing calendars at two schools, the total funds raised between October 16 and December 31 - approximately C$2,000 - have made a good start for the "ELT and Citizenship in Colombia Trust Fund" in the year 2004.
C$780 was raised through Global Unity book sales and donations at two conferences on October 22-23, and a cheque in the same amount was mailed to Ricardo Romero at The British Council Colombia on October 28. The sum of C$2,000 raised in 2004 also includes private donations of US$60 and C$50 , submitted at The 39th ASOCOPI National Conference in Santa Marta, Colombia on October 16, 2004.
A very special THANK YOU goes to the wonderful people at Language Studies International and Immigrant Services Society (in Vancouver, Canada) for their heart-warming support, and to other friends and colleagues who made contributions to support teachers and students in Colombia. And, of course, MUCHAS GRACIAS to all the Colombian teachers and students who participated in the creation of the "Visions of Our World" calendar.
